In 1920 Berlin becomes the third largest city in the world: After the end of the First World War, the longing masses are drawn to the growing metropolis in the hope of a dazzling future. But all that glitters in this new decade is not gold – housing shortages, inflation and poverty are rampant everywhere. All the more pressing is the general desire for distraction and comfort, which many seek in cafes, bars, cabarets and dance halls. Those who can afford it lead an unrestrained life – manners and morals, as they were once upheld, hardly play a role in this environment. The innumerable cheeky, often socially critical hits bore their way into people’s ear canals, because they pick up on the latest musical forms of expression as well as current topics.

The debauchery is approaching its climax when the young writer Christopher Isherwood arrives in the capital. He records his experiences in novels such as Lebwohl, Berlin, thereby creating a literary monument to Berlin in the golden 20s. In 1966, the composer John Kander processed this template into a musical cabaret and the fictional Kit Kat Klub became a metaphor for Berlin’s intoxicating nightlife.

Director Gil Mehmert resurrects the Kit Kat Klub on stage and creates a wild dance through the 20s. The exciting and fast-paced prelude to the Dortmund production of Cabaret, which will take place in the 2022/23 season, is scandalous!
